Reading challenge: A book by an author who was born in the same month you were

BLURB:
The title creature is a sort of barometer of life at the home of John Peerybingle and his much younger wife Dot. When things go well, the cricket on the hearth chirps; it is silent when there is sorrow. Tackleton, a jealous old man, poisons John's mind about Dot, but the cricket through its supernatural powers restores John's confidence and all ends happily.
I should like this, because I have liked other stories by Dickens, but honestly? This one just dragged and dragged and dragged for me. Can't remember much about the story itself other than there was a married couple where the man was quite a bit older than the woman and that they had a very small child.

I got this "book" as a present back in 1994. Basically it's just drawings of me by another small girl (although slightly older than me) and a few short sentences about who I am and where I live.
