They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all. When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed. Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed. Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him. And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.
I was first drawn to this book because of the lovely cover photo, but what really drew me in was the writing. The world building, characterization, plot ... it all worked so well for me today that if I did have a voice, I would've loudly screamed "NOOOO!" at the end because the next book hasn't been published yet and I definitely *need* more of this series.
I'm a big sucker for stories where the hero is a bit aloof and maybe even a bit cruel in the beginning, but as both the heroine and the reader get to know him throughout the novel, he both changes and a real gentleman emerges, and this one delivered in a big way. Pestilence was in no way lovable at first, he was downright cruel to the heroine, but he was also kind and compassionate. His background simply wasn't the same as a normal human's and it simply worked for me.
I loved how the hero and the heroine came together slowly and I actually why the heroine was attracted to hero and even though the opposite was a bit more difficult to comprehend, it did actually make sense to me. Personally, I would've liked it if the first kiss had happened a bit later on, but I really liked the fact that it took ages for them to get past the first kiss. And I absolutely adored the fact that Sara was Pestilence's first everything as it's such a relief from all the novels where the hero tends to be a walking-talking advert for STD-s waiting to happen. (Another one of my catnips).
If Thalassa's other work is anything like this, then I have definitely missed an awesome author so far as this is my first read by her and it really did blow me away.
