BLURB:
In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo with the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blonde, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place-just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood... Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago. Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful. And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.
When I started reading this book, I thought that it would follow the storyline of the game "Alice: Madness Returns". Well, gladly, it did not as that meant that I was going to have a whole new experience from the story of girl (or in this case, woman) called Alice.
The story seems familiar due to the fact that it still tells the story of original characters - Alice, Mad Hatter, the Rabbit, Walrus, Cheshire, Caterpillar and Jabberwocky, however, this one is not a children's tale. It's dark and mysterious and bloody...but most of all, it is entertaining and catching. Really hard to put down.
The story itself is very well written and not ever did I feel bored. There was always something happening (but not too much) and everything was progressing nicely, in similar pace - nothing was rushed.
I still have some questions that I would like to get an answer to, and hopefully I'll get them in the next book.

How I found this book? Well...some time ago I was reading a manga (nope, no review about that) about some Grimm fairy tales, with a dark twist - and I loved it; a story where not everything is "sweet and flowers". And then, when I happened across this book in a bookstore, of course I had to had it. As you probably know, the original Grimm fairytales were....well, you know... grim. And I was really fascinated about them (not sure whether it's a good sign though). Anyway...yes, when I happened across this book in the bookstore (not a Grimm story, of course...duh), then you can imagine how excited I was to read a classical story "Alice" in another world, a dark world - a totally new experience of that happy well known story.
And I wasn't disappointed, it was everything I hoped for and more - I loved it. So now on to the next book. And "see" you soon.
